Kiwi unearthed
Stephen Fry and Mark Cawardine are on the trail of kiwi and, with the help of Percy the dog, find one hiding down a hole. They are unusual birds, much more like mammals with their solid leg bones, higher body temperature than most birds and fur-like feathers. They also fill the niche held by mammals elsewhere such as badgers and hedgehogs in the UK, which forage for invertebrates in the forests and meadows. The kiwi plays dead whilst being handled. Despite being the national bird of New Zealand, these birds are now under great threat from ground predators. This one is already ringed following a concerted protection effort on these vulnerable birds from predators such as weasels, stoats and domestic dogs.
