The Royal Scottish National Orchestra at the Edinburgh International Festival

Celebrating Scotland's classical world, Jamie MacDougall introduces a trio of concertos performed by the RSNO at the Edinburgh International Festival.

The atmosphere was electric at the Usher Hall when conductor Elim Chan assembled the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and two world class soloists for a concert of concertos for the Edinburgh International Festival.

Jazz superstar Wynton Marsalis' newly minted trumpet concerto blends classical and jazz for a vibrant celebration of the trumpet's musical history. Soloist Alison Balsom describes it as an anthology of what the trumpet can do, and you'll hears nods to Louis Armstrong, Johann Nepomuk Hummel and even an elephant!

The wonderfully versatile French pianist Pierre Laurent Aimard performs Arnold Schoenberg's Piano Concerto - a piece written during WWII whilst the composer was in exile in the USA. It's known as an exceptionally difficult concerto to play but it's also a very exciting listen.

Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski's Concerto for Orchestra is a tour de force of orchestral writing which really puts the players through their paces. Blending Polish folk music with the compositional techniques from the early 20th century, this is a thrilling piece of music.

Jamie MacDougall also brings news of the latest series of string workshops by the Benedetti Foundation, and there's music from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra playing Berlioz.
