Alice Munro’s short stories, often set in small town Canada, weave together fiction and autobiography to explore the complexities of human life. The author, who died in May, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2013.

In β€œLying Under the Apple Tree”, a girl approaching womanhood grapples with first love, social expectations and future possibilities. Her relationship with the local stable boy is deepening but she’s reluctant to go public.
