This, along with his old friendship with Saulo, prompts him to help Nico Robin escape by marking a water route with ice to lead her to a nearby island and secretly freezing the rudder of a ship that tries to chase after her. However, he warns Robin that if she caused any trouble, he would be the first to come after her. Afterwards, Robin leads a hard life on the run thanks to the 79 million-berry placed on her head by Spandine. She develops a distrust of people and becomes resigned to her fate that she will never have true friends. Back in the present in Enies Lobby, Robin tells the Straw Hat Pirates that she would rather die now than have them betray her later when they start to think of her and her past as a burden. However, Luffy wages war on the World Government by having Sogeking shoot the flag, and makes Robin admit that she wants to live and go back to the seas with her crewmates.
