The physical war may be hundreds of miles away but its impact is omnipresent, not just in defence and foreign policy, but in politics, energy, the economy and the lives of people up and down the country.

Anne McElvoy of Politico has been reporting on Germany since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
