St David: Seven Reasons to Be Joyful 6: Holiness and Pilgrimage
The sixth in our series marking 900 years since St David was recognised as the patron saint of Wales, led from Rome by Fr Matthew Roche Saunders.
In previous episodes of the 'Seven Reasons To be Joyful' series of Celebration services, we have explored various places that our Patron Saint David visited, or with which he had some connection. But what about Rome, a city David didn’t visit? Beyond the fact that it remains today a beating heart of global Christian faith, David’s connection to the city actually comes several hundred years after his life when, 900 years ago this year, David was recognised by Pope Callixtus II, who also affirmed that two pilgrimages to St David’s Cathedral in Pembrokeshire were equivalent in spiritual importance to one pilgrimage to Rome.
On this Palm Sunday, out and about in Rome, and with singing from the Venerable English College choir and Officina Chorale, Fr Matthew Roche-Saunders reflects on the historical recognition of St David that took place there, enabling his legacy to become a global motto: ‘be joyful, keep the faith, and do the little things you have heard and seen me do’.
