St David: Seven Reasons to Be Joyful 4 - Refreshment and Relationships

The fourth in our series marking 900 years since St David was recognised as the patron saint of Wales, led from Brittany by Canon Edwin Counsell.

It’s 900 years since St David was recognised as the patron saint of Wales by Pope Callixtus II. To mark that very significant endorsement, we continue our series in the footsteps of St David by making progress to Brittany. Tradition tells us that St David was familiar with this distinctive region of north-west France; as we’ll hear, there are many cultural and linguistic similarities that link this Celtic part of the world with Wales and Cornwall. On this Mothering Sunday we retrace the journey that St Non, David’s mother, made to Brittany towards the end of her life.

Canon Edwin Counsell, Rector of St Illtud’s church in Llantwit Major where St David was believed to have studied as a young man, visits two churches in Brittany. He meets local people who explain how St David (or St Divy as he’s known here) and his mother Non are still venerated to this day.

The reading is from Colossians 3: 12 – 17. All the music in our service is sung in Breton and includes parts of two canticles in honour of St Divy and St Nonne.

Kantik en enor da Santez Nonn
(Let us sing with all our heart in praise of St Nonne, and ask for her prayers and blessing)

Kantik Sant Divy
(We pray to our beloved patron saint Divy; hear our prayers. Let us join you in the heavens)

Other hymns – including one that’s very familiar - are sung by Mouezh Paotred Breizh – Breton male voice choirs.
