Flic Saor

A small group of men have kept table football alive in Ireland. After years of practising in community halls and local pubs, they are now heading to the World Cup in Rome.

A fhad a bhí an Corn Domhanda ag glacadh seilbhe ar shamhlaíocht lucht leanúna sacair ar fud na cruinne, bhí grúpa fear as gach cearn d'Éirinn ag déanamh réidh dá gcomórtas domhanda féin.

Tá foireann Peil Tábla na hÉireann ag ullmhú le blianta fada dá gCorn Domhanda sa Róimh. I ndiaidh uaireanta an chloig ag cleachtadh i hallaí áitiúla, ag plé straitéisí agus ag péinteáil mionsamplacha, tá an lá mór tagtha ar deireadh. Níl siad i measc na bhfoirne is fearr ar domhan ach tá spiorad na hiomaíochta go smior iontu. Is caitheamh aimsire é agus beidh orthu aghaidh a thabhairt ar imreoirí gairmiúla as tíortha eile. Ag an fhoireann seo, ní bhaineann sé leis an bhua, ach leis an chairdeas, leis an éalúchas agus le hathbheochan caitheamh aimsire a bhí acu agus iad óg.

As World Cup fever takes hold, and football fans are gripped by the build-up, a group of men across Ireland are preparing for their own competition. Ireland's table football team has been training for their World Cup in Rome for years.

After hours of practising in town halls, discussing tactics and painting figures, the big day arrives. They aren’t ranked among the top teams in the world, but they have a competitive spirit. These local men play as a hobby and have to face rivals who play the game professionally in other countries. For this team, it isn’t about winning, it’s about friendship, an escape and a revival of their childhood hobby.
