Deilbh Dr Hay - An Island Doctor’s Legacy
Dìleab an Dotair John Hay à Ùige Leòdhais, agus a thasglann sònraichte de dh’fhilmichean. The legacy of Dr John Hay from Uig on the Isle of Lewis, and his remarkable film archive.
Bha an Dotair John Hay, nach maireann, na dhotair teaghlaich air an robh meas is spèis ann an sgìre Ùige is Bheà rnaraigh an Eilean Leòdhais bho na 70an chun na 90an. A dh’aindeoin iarratasan na h-obrach a’ frithealadh sgìre fharsaing leis fhèin, chruthaich e tasglann iongantach de dh’fhilmichean is de dhealbhan de na daoine agus den choimhearsachd ris an robh e cho dìleas.
Tha na dealbhan sin nan clà r thar luach de sgìre chroiteareachd is iasgaich a bha ag atharrachadh, agus cuideachd a’ foillseachadh an dà imh a bha eadar e fhèin agus muinntir na sgìre. Tha an neach-dhealbh Calum Aonghas MacAoidh an tòir air beatha an Dtr Hay, a thasglann agus cuid de na daoine a nochd anns na mìlltean de dhealbhan a chaidh a thogail. Tha e cuideachd a’ clà radh cuid de mhuinntir sgìre Ùige an latha an-diugh ann an sreath de dhealbhan ùra.
The late Dr John Hay was a highly respected and long-serving GP in Uig and Bernera on the Isle of Lewis from the 1970s to the 1990s. Despite the demands of serving a large practice, he managed to create a vast film archive of life in the community to which he was devoted.
Like many island communities at the time, crofting and fishing were the foundation of daily life and the resulting films and photographs are a priceless record of a changing society. They also reveal the affection in which Dr Hay was held locally. Photographer Calum Angus Mackay goes in search of John Hay, his archive and the people he captured on film. In a series of specially commissioned portraits, he also presents a snapshot of the people of Uig today.
