Worlds Past

Gary West looks ahead to the most important piping week of the year, with music from a range of artists appearing at Piping Live and reflections on pipe bands of the past.

Gary West looks ahead to a massive week in the piping and drumming world, as Piping Live, the biggest festival of its kind in the world begins in earnest. And as the world pipe band championships get back underway for the first time since 2019, he reflects on the pipe band sound of the past, with sets from the Vale of Atholl from 1987 and the Edinburgh City Police from 1962. We also hear from the newly crowned Scottish pipe band champions, the Field Marshall Montgomery, from the Inveraray and District in concert in 2013, and from soloists Connor Sinclair, Colin MacLellan and Andrea Boyd, while the high energy folk sound is provided by the flying fingered Lorne MacDougall and uillean pipe supremo, Paddy Keenan.
