Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Well I read something the other day and it said, if you’ve been friends with someone for 7 years, you’re highly likely to be friends with them for life. So I did what some of you might be doing now, and  immediately thought about all of  my friendships that have lasted 7 years. I realised that, I actually couldn’t imagine my life without any of them. The dynamics of the friendships vary and have probably changed over the years, but I value every single one. I have a friend called Joe who was by my side when I opened my GCSE results and realised I didn’t do as well as I thought, and he was also by my side as a best man on my wedding day. My friends have walked with me through some dark valleys but also some wonderful mountaintops and for that I’m really grateful.

I said a little prayer after reflecting because I really hope I’m being as good as a friend to them, as they are to me. I had this one friend called Daisy who battled with diabetes and sadly passed away in her sleep on December 19th 2017. We’d been friends for over a decade and she was the type of friend that always thought about others. Three days after she passed away, I got a card through in the post and it read this. Hey lovely, merry Christmas. Hope it’s the best one yet and I hope you know I love you loads. Lots and lots of love, Daisy.

It was incredibly bittersweet. On the one hand it was special that my good friend had spent what she didn’t know would be her last day, writing me a card and posting it and I’ll be able to keep that forever. But on the other hand, it was a reminder of how much of a hole she left. After notoriously being bad at writing birthday and Christmas cards, I promised myself that because of Daisy I’d start sending them. To be honest with you, I’m still awful at it and I know she’s up in heaven laughing at me. But thinking about her this week, has reminded me that I’m gonna call someone my friend, I’ve gotta try my best to be a pretty good one.
