Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

I always know Mothering Sunday is coming up because my mum starts texting me pictures of her magnolia getting ready to bloom. It’s a miniature tree I gave her years ago – magnolia stellata, with white flowers that look like stars. I think of her whenever I see them growing in people’s front gardens or peeping over a fence. This year as I’m seeing the daffies, hyacinths and crocuses make their appearance, I’m thinking of another mother’s love – that of my friend Syama. She’s originally from Durban, where the flowers are pretty striking – sweet scented frangipani and bright purple jacarandas that line the streets…but after marriage moved to Canada where she’s raised her three beautiful daughters.Ìý

Ìý

Syama’s around my age, so it was a shock when she was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer that has proved very challenging to treat. She and her family have been holding the ultimate tension of giving every fight to beat the disease, yet so graciously, even in pain and sorrow, finding gratitude and surrender in facing the possibility of her departure. A few weeks ago, when winter was still in full swing, she sent me a message:

“Today, the sun came up after a few very gray days, and it made the snow sparkle like it was made of the tiniest Swarovski crystals. I’m so happy to find Krishna and His mastery, beauty and charm in these small but powerful moments…I’m trying remind my girls daily that these are the things that make me feel closer to Krishna, so in their lonely moments, hopefully they will find Him too - in the water, earth and sky - and feel comforted.â€Ìý

Ìý

Syama is practising smaranam, the art of remembrance. The great yoga texts teach that the greatest challenge of all in a world of distraction, is to direct the mind toward remembering eternal truths; to remembering God’s love and grace. I know that’s what she sees, in the deep blue hyacinths that have just started to appear, and when I see them, I remember her too, with prayer and love. As I see the daffodils open I’m praying for her courage and with the sunny primroses, her strength — for the love of her family to hold her in whatever may come in the weeks ahead.Ìý
