Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

I went on a coffee date with another mum recently where she reported alarming stories about her teenager. At the end of her much needed outburst she looked me dead in the eye and ominously said 鈥測ou鈥檒l see鈥 鈥 I left feeling uneasy. I鈥檝e read that聽a teen鈥檚 brain isn鈥檛 fully developed till they are 25.聽Adults think with the pre-frontal cortex, the brains rational part. Teens process information with the amygdala, the emotional part 鈥 biologically kids aren鈥檛 really thinking as much as they are feeling.聽Some of the parenting books I have read offer up great tips such as 鈥榓void jumping in with advice or fixing their problems.鈥

So I try talking through different scenarios they may face in advance. From the more obvious topics like 鈥渨hat would you do if you felt pressured by peers?鈥 to deeper questions like 鈥渨hy is it important to fail?鈥 But it鈥檚 when I recount personal experiences of how and why I handled situations poorly and what it took to create real change in my life that really impacts my children.聽The stories I tell them always come back to the same place 鈥 Prayer. Prayer has been the catalyst for true and meaningful change throughout my life. Prayer forced me (and still does) to look at my self-created unhealthy patterns, to relinquish blame and recognise the victim mind-set.

Prayer has also helped me survive many tough moments and so at home I place a large emphasis on prayer with my kids.. Whatever experiences life brings I believe it鈥檚 vital they learn to access their inner sanctuary.聽Guru Nanak, founder of the Sikh faith provides a beautiful metaphor on the benefits of prayer through the example of the lotus flower. A lotus lives in the murky pond, its leaves have a special characteristic whereby they can never get wet. Even if strong waves may thrash them about the water literally rolls off the leaves and the lotus always remains gracefully floating above the water.聽I truly hope I can achieve the lotus mind-set and just believe that prayer can better us so that we learn to remain graceful, floating and level through the worldly highs and lows.
