Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Purim, the most joyful and raucous festival of the Jewish year starts tonight.ÌýÌýIt marks the time when the Jewish community lived within the ancient Persian empire.ÌýÌýA Jew-hater called Haman came to power and conspired with the king to annihilate the Jews.ÌýÌýBut God had other plans.ÌýÌýThe queen was a closet Jew called Esther and she was able to outmanoeuvre Haman together with Mordechai, the leader of the Jewish community in Shushan, the capital of the empire. Purim – the anniversary of the victory – fits the old Jewish joke rather well: they tried to kill us, we won, let’s eat.

Ìý

But on Purim, we take this idea seriously.ÌýÌýWe read the story of Esther from a scroll, dress up in silly costumes, give each other gifts of food, donate money to the poor and end the day with a boisterous feast at which we sing, dance and drink lots of wine.ÌýÌýI’m pleased I’m broadcasting this before Purim, rather than after... Despite all the silliness, Purim carries an important idea, and it lies in its odd name, which is ancient Persian for lots.ÌýHaman, the villain of the piece, selected the day on which to annihilate the Jews by lots.ÌýÌýAnd throughout the story, Haman hints at his belief that his success or failure – and that of the Jews – are mere random chance.

Ìý

I believe that this is one of the most difficult ideas to contemplate.ÌýÌýWhen things are good, it might not be so hard to accept that life is meaningful.ÌýÌýBut at times of suffering and conflict such as now, and even in our ordinary lives it’s not so straightforward.ÌýÌýAll of us suffer heartbreak and loss – perhaps a bereavement, a failed job or a broken relationship – and it’s hard to imagine that they fit into a divine plan, certainly not one we like. Purim encourages us to look behind the scenes and see God’s hand, to ask, in the words of Mordechai when he hears about Haman’s plot ‘what is happening’ and, more important still, ‘whyÌýit is happening’.ÌýÌýThe message of Purim is that life is meaningful, not just a sequence of random events.ÌýÌýIt’s a day of friendship, connection and celebration, and one that also encourages us to begin to join the dots that make sense of our lives.
