Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

They say never meet your heroes, well this week, Zoe, I met one of mine. I think you might know him. I met one of the stars of my child hood, TV legend and maths superstar Mr Johnny Ball. Now for anyone who thinks ‘That name sounds familiar’, Johnny was a stalwart of telly in the 1980s, his programmes were mostly about numbers and how much fun Maths could be, inspiring kids to discover a joy of arithmetic. No mean feat especially for me, I’m no Maths fan and I’m not much good at it either. I was pleased to see Johnny hadn’t lost any of his passion not only for numbers but also for enthusing others, he shook my hand and quick as a flash said, ‘Give me two number between 90 and a hundred!’ within a millisecond he’d multiplied them together like some sort of Mathematical magician, he beamed a great big grin at me, I went weak at the knees and felt like I’d met Beyoncé, totally fangirling and completely awe struck.Ìý

Ìý

Johnny Ball has, very much, still got it. Enthusiasm is infectious and conveys any lesson more effectively. We all know people who can light up a room with their for joy of their subject, and even if it isn’t our ‘thing’ we find ourselves drawn in to their glow, the message better communicated by the passion of the messenger.18thÌýcentury philosopher and theologian Samuel Taylor Coleridge said, ‘Nothing is as contagious as enthusiasm, truth accomplishes no victories without it’.ÌýMeaning that enthusiasm isn’t just about getting excited but is also a tool to facilitate change, to make the world a better place, I partner this with the bit in the bible where it says, ‘Never tire of doing good’, in other words, a rallying cry to me to stay enthusiastic so that little victories of love might happen.Ìý

Ìý

Well I don’t know what he’s like to live with but I left my brief meeting with the lovely Mr Ball, giddy and enthused, full of a zest, keen to utilise his infectious enthusiasm in the rest of my day. There is just one confession though, despite all Johnny’s oomph I still don’t know my 7 times table, please don’t tell your Dad, Zoe I’d feel like I’d let him down.
