Pause For Thought
Recently I was given a gift. It was only small. In fact it weighed less than 10grams. But it may have been the most generous gift I have ever been given. It was a small jar of saffron, a luxury spice which, by weight, is more valuable than gold. Apparently, thousands of flowers need to be grown to produce the fragile precious red stems, which are then harvested at dawn by hand before being individually separated and dried. But this wasn’t the only reason the gift was so generous. The family who had presented it to me had only just been evacuated from Kabul. As the Taliban had closed in on them, they had packed quickly. Just one small bag each. I don’t know what else they chose, but they made sure there was at least one gift-wrapped box of prized Afghan saffron, handpicked by the pre-Taliban women’s workforce in Herat, to give to new friends in the UK.Â
This premeditated kindness to people that they didn’t know at such a traumatic time in their lives really touched me. My family had enjoyed spending an afternoon with them, talking about cricket, and cars and social media. Their six children and my six children fed the ducks and shared a picnic and ran around together as though there was no such thing as cultural or language barriers.  But while I had begun the day thinking I was going to show my Afghan Muslim neighbours hospitality, they ended up teaching me something much more profound. My new friends reminded me of the sort of hospitality Jesus modelled. He had nothing, but gave everything, frequently using the sharing of food and time as a means to communicate love, compassion and acceptance. He welcomed people from all sorts of backgrounds and circumstances, breaking down barriers and thinking of others, even in his own darkest hour.Â
Afghanistan is currently facing what has been called the worst humanitarian crisis the planet has ever seen. 95% of the country’s population do not have enough food, and millions of children are facing starvation. I can’t look at that precious jar of saffron sitting in my kitchen, and not be challenged to do something to help. And when I feel powerless and overwhelmed I look at it again and remember however little we have there is always an opportunity to be generous.
