Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

It’s always abouteight weeks before Ramadan that I think to myself, “Girl, you need to get good with God”.Ramadan is the month in the Muslim calendar, which is characterised by fasting. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, the Muslim calendar is Luna which means each year the dates move forward slightly, so whereas Ramadan started towards the end of April last year, this year it starts within the first few days of April. Confusing, I know, it gets me by surprise every time.

The prelude to my “get good with God”“ routine usually starts with me feeling like I just can’t keep up with my prayers, if it’s summer, I say the prayersare too far apart and if it’s in winter I say they’re to close, I get distant from people, and even become a bit cynical, and I I forget to be grateful for small things, like having my parents around, and having the ability to work. Suddenly, a social media post will pop up on my timeline about ways to prepare for the holy month of fasting. It’s like clockwork, my brain doesn't remember that Ramadan is coming up, but my body and my spirit feel it.

This year was no different, having skipped some of the spiritual practices that leaves me feeling centred. I sat on the floor next to my bed questioning myself, the thought didn't last long before the distracting ping of social media on my phone averted my attention, but I am glad it did. It was the normal, start drinking more water, pray more, get a good sleep routine, type post that I am used to, but there was also a quote by Ibn Atta Illa13th centuryEgyptianscholar that saidforgive yourself and be gentle.

This was something I was not used to. I really enjoy Ramadan itself, but I find the lead up to it quite stressful. I fear I won’t be able to complete the faston top of work, and additional worship. Something else the post said, is:if you are struggling and yearning for closeness to God, know God has put that yearning in your heart in the first place. This was the perfect lesson that even when I am low and full short of my expectations for myself, God still considers my heart.
