Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Monday was Valentine’s Day as you know, and I happened to find myself heading home later than planned. The evening was drawing in, and with it a very cold breeze, but still I counted person after person, walking along with a paper wrapped bouquet of flowers. It was touching - looking briefly at the face of each person, their mind clearly already on the loved one they’d be delivering their blooms to. A man with a sleeping baby in a carrier, holding a little one…maybe he said he was going out for a walk and was coming back with a surprise…a woman with a clutch of long stemmed roses, each one with a coloured tag hanging from it, with a handwritten message…a teenager with an optimistic grin and a big frothy cellophane creation…

As I guessed their stories, I walked on to my home temple, my place of worship and a sanctuary in the city. Valentine’s Day had happened to coincide with a sacred festival day and in the main shrine, not only had some people brought bouquets to lay before the altar, but the sacred forms of the Divine, Sri Sri Radha and Krishna, were decorated with beautiful fresh garlands of roses and carnations. Flowers are such a sweet way to show love, but even more important is the love itself. In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna says that He gratefully accepts the smallest offering – a fruit, a leaf, a flower, or even a small amount of water, if it’s offered with sincere love.

In the temple, fresh garlands, clothes, ornaments, sweet smelling incense and oil lamps, as well as freshly cooked food are offered daily…a tangible way to offer love to God. In my morning worship at home, I’ve been offering the tiniest little pink flowers from a houseplant…no roses, but I try to put my heart and prayer into it as I imagine showers of jasmine buds and gardenias… I think anything can say I love you, if the love is true. I remember a time my Dad gave my mum an odd looking houseplant that we couldn’t stop laughing at, and she was still touched. As for my love, he got two handfuls of his favourite snack bars – don’t judge me - they’re really good, I promise!
