Pause For Thought
I came across a wonderful word recently:听wintering. No, it has nothing to do with log fires, fluffy slippers or mixed aerials medal tallies. Author Katherine May uses the word to describe life鈥檚 wintery moments. Just as winter is a season of retreat and hibernation for much of the natural world, wintering describes the way our bodies and souls slow down and seek rest and recuperation in times of loss or difficulty.
听
I鈥檝e found myself in this slowed-down wintery state since losing my father last year. It鈥檚 not like I鈥檓 still in the depths of grief, just that I鈥檝e been operating on half power鈥攍ike a torch with dead batteries鈥攈aving less energy for people and work taking longer to complete.听I鈥檝e been internally fighting this slowed pace, longing to get back to the life and energy of summer.听But as Katherine notes, plants and animals don鈥檛 fight winter. They don鈥檛 pretend it isn鈥檛 happening or try living like it鈥檚 still summer time. Instead, they prepare for it, adapt to it, then retreat, letting the season do its renewing work.听听
听
The Book of Ecclesiastes famously talks about there being a 鈥榮eason鈥 for everything鈥攖hat there鈥檚 a time to plant and a time to harvest; a time to demolish and to rebuild; to mourn and dance, to cry and laugh. I鈥檝e read these words for years but are perhaps only now starting to understand them. Not only does this approach to life suggest each season is finite, the next one surely on its way, but that God has something significant to do in us through each of them. In God鈥檚 hands seasons are purposeful things. Remember that, Sheridan. A friend of mine once climbed Kilimanjaro. She remembers her guides purposely reducing her pace. 鈥淪lowly, slowly,鈥 they said again and again. Those who rushed to the summit failed to make it because their bodies hadn鈥檛 had time to adjust. We can鈥檛 rush any season, let alone winter. So let it do its job, Sheridan鈥攕lowly, slowly. Wintering is there to help you adapt and rejuvenate. Spring will surely come in time.
