Pause For Thought
In a few days time my remarkable friend Chris is retiring.
Handing in his keys as the gatekeeper of York’s medieval treasure, the City Walls.
For nearly 40 years Chris has trudged along the four-mile route - come rain, shine or Christmas snow.
Opening the 18 ancient gates at dawn and locking them at dusk.
All for the pleasure of over a million people who visit the walls each year.
It probably won’t be easy for Chris to leave at first.
He has quite a particular form of autism.
Communicates in his own special way.
Lives by a rigorous set of daily habits and routines.
For instance he always has exactly eight cups of his beloved tea every morning.
My life has been enriched by Chris since childhood.
His extraordinary mind and gentle spirit have always endeared him to people.
He’s funny, too.
Whenever he takes the wine from me at Holy Communion, he shouts ‘cheers!’ before taking a sip.
Chris lives a full and relatively independent life.
Has his own house, car and job.
Travels abroad on coach tours.
A loving, supportive community around Chris has helped make this possible.
Family, church friends, neighbours and colleagues have all contributed to his flourishing.
Not least during one of his darkest times a few years ago.
While at work, Chris was attacked by a gang of thugs and thrown off the City Walls.
Fortunately he escaped with cuts and bruises but he was left feeling distraught and terrified.
Understandably reluctant to go back.
And yet eventually he did return to his beloved walls.
Chaperoned by family and friends until his confidence was restored.
Their care of Chris was a beautiful reminder to me of the power of gentle encouragement.
Of ‘building each other up in love’ as the Bible describes it.
I think I’m living out my faith most effectively when I’m striving to bring out the best in others.
Helping to broaden horizons and restore confidence with an encouraging word or compassionate ear.
Perhaps it’s what the Christian mystic St Bernard meant by love like this creating a ‘fountain of life'.
And cups of tea I hope too, Zoe.
Probably about eight of them knowing him.
