Mairi Mhor

Drama based on the life and songs of poet Mary MacPherson, known as Màiri Mhòr nan Òran. The film brings her life, poetry and legacy to life.

Dràma stèidhte air beatha agus òrain na bana-bhàird Màiri Nic a’ Phearsain, no mar as fhèarr a dh’aithnichear i, Màiri Mhòr nan Òran. Tha am film a’ toirt sealladh air a beatha, a bàrdachd is a dìleab.
Chuir iomrall ceartais Màiri dhan phrìosan ann an 1871. Thug seo buaidh mhòr oirre is bhon uair sin thòisich i ri cruthachadh bhàrdachd. Timcheall air an aon àm bha gluasadan poilitigeach a’ tòiseachadh mu shuidheachadh chroitearan is mi-chinnt mu sheilbh an fhearainn thar na Gàidhealtachd is nan eilean. Thug a cuid bàrdachd taic do na h-iomairtean fearainn a bha a’ dol sna 1880an. Cluinnear na h-òrain as cliùitiche aice san fhilm, air an seinn le Cathy Anna Nic a’ Phì.

Drama based on the life and songs of poet Mary MacPherson, known as Màiri Mhòr nan Òran. The film brings her life, poetry and legacy to life.

In 1871 a miscarriage of justice put Mary in prison. This had a profound effect on her and from then on she started creating poetry. Around the same time grievances about land ownership and the position of crofters led to political movements. Mary’s poetry tapped into that time and in song helped spread support the drive for fairer land tenure. The film soundtrack features Mary’s most celebrated poetry sung by Cathy Ann MacPhee.
