Comedian, actress and 鶹Լ Three’s This Country creator and star Daisy May Cooper talks about her new memoir, Don’t Laugh, It Will Only Encourage Her. This honest and hilarious autobiography looks at Daisy’s life, from growing up in rural poverty in the UK, to working low-paid, unrewarding jobs to make ends meet after attending drama school, to finally reaching stardom in her thirties.

TV presenter and host Paddy McGuinness tells Zoe about his new autobiography, My Lifey. The book takes the reader back to his Bolton-based childhood in the 1970s, as a tearaway teen, and his unexpected journey to stardom, having originally wanted to become a lab technician. He also gives an insight into behind-the-scenes of our favourite TV shows.

Plus, Jay Flynn returns with another round of his Virtual Radio Quiz where he tests the team on their general knowledge to see who comes out on top.

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Sometimes I wish I could readthemindsof my offspringbecause just when I think I knoweverything about them they dosomething thatthrows me for a loop. For example when my son was8he was a well organised, clean and tidy, neat-freakandthen one day, for no obvious reason,he stopped taking showersand the smell became uncomfortable.I had just delivered twinsso didn’t notice for a few days. I remember how much easier life was when it was just me and even afterone child I still had an identity of my own. But after birthing twins, the jump from 1 to 3 kids was so taxing that I found myself waking up before the crack of dawn and thinking“Ican’t cope withbeinga mothertoday”.

Each child was jealous of my attention and the ways in which they expressed those insecurities had me feeling like a failure at times– which might account for my son’s shower boycott. The twins would cry every time I went to the bathroom or if Ihuggedone before the other.

The simplest things in life just became miserable andlockdown didn’t help. There is thisbeautifulconcept in Sikhism known asChardiKalawhich encourages one to remain in high spirits at all times. To practice acceptance and faith in God.I thoughtabout ita lotandwondered if I was being ungrateful somehow by harbouring these thoughts –wasit ok to say them out-loud?When you’re not completely in love with being a motherall the timeit can feel isolatingbut I was struggling to find space for myself.

Unable to hold it in any longer,Isharedmyraw, brutally honest feelingswith my husband. I didn’t gloss overthem withsentences like“it’s exhausting but I’m blessed” – instead fully acknowledging how Ifeltat the time brought with it a sense of immediate reliefandmade my problemsfeelmuchsmaller.I believeit’s completely possible toloveand be grateful foryour kidsyet need space from them at times. It’s in the space that there is room to feel gratitude and that’s whatChardiKalais to me. A state of being fully grateful for this human experience yet also being honest, compassionate and vulnerable about life’s sometimes uncomfortable lessons.
