A Bible for All
Roy Jenkins looks at the impact of Bible translations on lives, languages and cultures.
For this Bible Sunday edition Roy Jenkins looks at the impact of Bible translations on lives, languages and cultures, particularly where people encounter the scriptures for the very first time. Arguably in Wales this first happened 400 years ago with the publication of the first complete version of the Bible in Welsh. The effect was, say some, to standardise and preserve the Welsh language. Even today, new translations have a transforming effect on many minority languages and cultures around the world. And yet in countries such as Wales the struggle nowadays isn't so much about creating translations , whether in English or Welsh, but in encouraging people to read the book. Roy reports on some recent initiatives to stimulate interest in the Bible, through performances, paraphrases and even through a psalm-themed garden.
