Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Whether it鈥檚 the Avengers, Black Widow, Batman or, good old James Bond 鈥 the quintessential British spy 鈥 whose job it is to seduce, steal, cheat, beat and assassinate, all in Her Majesty's secret service, I love an action film!

Each is different, but all have the same basic plot. A city, a country, or sometimes the entire world is over-run by bad guys. The law; the police, army or government, is too weak, too slow or too stupid to meet the threat. Enter the gun-slinging hero 鈥 who, though through nail-biting shoot-outs, breath-taking chases and nerve-jangling violence will, in the end, bludgeon their way to victory.

But my dilemma is this. I know that all this - what experts call 鈥榯he myth of redemptive violence鈥 鈥 the misguided idea that punching-power can ever create stability, doesn鈥檛 work.

And I also love the music of U2. I raise this because I remember visiting Bono鈥檚 hometown, Dublin, and walking into St. Patrick鈥檚 Cathedral, with the lyrics of his haunting classic Peace on Earth, 鈥淲ho said that if you go in hard you won't get hurt?鈥, ringing in my head.

I wanted to see for myself the 鈥楧oor of Reconciliation鈥; an old, broken wooden door, that鈥檚 now an exhibition piece. Back in 1492 this same door was all that separated two feuding families; the Fitzgeralds, and the Butlers who鈥檇 sought sanctuary from their rivals inside the Cathedral. The families had been warring for years; the advantage shifting back and forth between them. But, remembering the words of Jesus, 鈥淧ut your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword鈥, Gerald Fitzgerald pleaded with the Butler鈥檚 to accept a truce.

The problem was that suspecting treachery, they refused to open the door. In response Gerald hacked a hole in it and thrust his arm through, as a pledge of goodwill. The daring gesture proved enough. The door was opened, peace was achieved, and the English language was given the expression, 'to chance your arm'.

So, I鈥檓 conflicted. On one hand I still love the escapism of those action films, but on the other I know that to put my sword away and chance my arm, rather than resort to Rambo style tactics 鈥 either as an individual or as a nation 鈥 is the way to change the game.
