Matt Damon, the Oscar winning actor, is live from the Cannes Film Festival and chats to Zoe about his brand new movie, 'Stillwater'. In the film an unemployed roughneck called Bill Baker (played by Matt Damon) travels from Oklahoma to Marseille to visit his estranged daughter Allison. Imprisoned for a murder she claims she did not commit, Allison seizes on a new tip that could exonerate her and presses Bill to engage her legal team. But Bill, eager to prove his worth and regain his daughters trust, takes matters into his own hands. Hailing from Boston, Matt attended Harvard University and gained his first acting experience with the American Repertory Theatre. He made his feature film debut in ‘Mystic Pizza’, followed by roles in ‘School Ties’, Walter Hill’s ‘Geronimo: An American Legend’, the cable project’s ‘Rising Son’ and Tommy Lee Jones’ ‘The Good Old Boys’. However, it was Damon’s portrayal of a guilt-ridden Gulf War veteran tormented by memories of a battlefield incident in 1996’s ‘Courage Under Fire’ that first put him on the radar of both critics and audiences alike.

Pause For Thought
One thing I’ve always done in my life is try to focus on the goal. The Destination. The prize. From an exam result, to saving for a first car or house, the end point has always been where my eyes are fixed.
Ìý
When I first picked up a pen at 11 years old and started writing rap lyrics, I thought to myself, I’d love to win a MOBO award orÌýÌýa Grammy. I’m still waiting on the Grammy, but I’ve won a few MOBO’s. In 2010 when I won my first one, I remember walking the red carpet with paparazzi taking pictures. Sounds glamorous but to be honest they probably didn’t know who I was.
Ìý
ÌýAnyway, I remember meeting some of the people I’m a fan of. From Trevor Nelson, to Dizzee Rascal to Billy Ocean. I picked up the award from Reggie Yates who was presenting on the night, and as I stood there giving my speech, I realised that my satisfaction and jubilation didn’t come from the prize, it came from the journey.
Ìý
ÌýWithout wanting to sound ungrateful, because I’m far from,ÌýÌýit dawned on me that the challenge of the journey, the hard work, the hours in the studio, the rejection, the curve balls and the fact that i managed to overcome all of that, was wayÌýÌýmore beautiful, satisfying, and humbling than receiving the prize.Ìý
Ìý
The truth is, before the game even kicked off last night, England were already winners. It’s been a journey of successfully uniting a country that felt divided. A journey of trying their best on the pitch, and fighting for justice off of it. A journey of Gareth Southgate missing a penalty in 1996, to him leading England to the finals of the Euro’s in 2021. Any prize that comes as a result of that will be fulfilling I’m sure, but even if not, so much has already been achieved and overcome.Ìý
Ìý
My mum used to say this Psalm to me before bed when I was younger.ÌýPsalm 23:4:ÌýEven though I walk through the darkest valley,I will fear no evil, for you are with me.ÌýIf a great result comes, then great, but if not I trust that I’m not alone and the journey will still teach me some valuable lessons along the way.Ìý
