Richie is in Sharleen Spiteri's garden for the Big Bee Challenge and Tom Odell performs live

Sharleen Spiteri lets Richie Anderson into her garden in Wales for Radio 2's Big Bee Challenge plus Tom Odell performs live from the 麻豆约拍's Maida Vale studios.

Richie Anderson is out on the road for the Big Bee Challenge and is dropping in to see some of our favourite celebrities. It's all part of Radio 2's Big Bee Challenge, where we can all do something to help the dwindling bee population. Richie shows that no matter the size of your garden, balcony or window box, you can make a difference to help the bees and have some fun along the way.

Today Texas lead singer, Sharleen Spiteri, has let him into her garden in North East Wales to look at all the ways she can help the bees.

They're joined by the outreach officer from the Bumblebee Conservation Trust in Wales, Clare Flynn, who takes Sharleen around her garden to build a "bee breakfast."

Brit and Ivor Novello award winning songwriter, plus platinum-selling, chart-topping artist Tom Odell performs live from the 麻豆约拍's Maida Vale studios. After a dark period of mental health stalked most of his 2018 and 2019, Tom wrote his way through it, eventually letting down his guard and pouring his feelings into new music that forms his fourth album, 'monsters'. He has won Brit Awards, Ivor Novellos and had three top five albums in the UK, he鈥檚 also had success worldwide with platinum certifications across the globe and sold 13 million singles, 2.5 million albums and has an impressive 2.6 billion streams to his name!! Tom has a large UK Headline Tour for 2022 and is performing at the sold out Jazz Caf茅 later this summer.

Along with Clare Runacres on news, Richie Anderson on travel and Mike Williams on sport, Zoe and the team have the best start to your morning. With celeb guests, headlines, tunes chosen by listeners, and more music that you can shake a glitterball at!

There's also a Pause For Thought from Paul Karensa and listeners on the line as Zoe entertains the nation with fun for the family!

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Well eye eye 鈥 this week I鈥檝e had my cataracts done. Unusual for a 42 year old. I was the youngest in the waiting room by some decades, as we all squinted together at a muted subtitled 麻豆约拍s Under The Hammer. In my case, I鈥檝e had two corneal transplants, and for the first time in years, I鈥檓 seeing some improvement, in seeing. It鈥檚 not 2020 vision... although after last year, we might need to redefine what 鈥2020 vision鈥 means. Not so perfect after all.听

I鈥檓 discovering a new meaning of gratitude too. I鈥檓 endlessly thankful to the donors of my corneas, that outer layer of the eye, so small, so crucial in non-blurry sight. Two lovely human beings saw a box and they ticked it. Their choice helped me to see boxes that I鈥檝e now ticked, on the organ donation website.听

I鈥檓 so grateful to their families, because often, when the time comes, relatives can untick those boxes later on. We鈥檙e squeamish, I get it. In fact, I鈥檝e got it, once in each eye. I鈥檓 not out to convince anyone to go against their judgement. St Paul wrote to a young Christian church: 鈥淓ach of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.鈥 So all I can do is give cheerfully, and give cheer, and maybe that will encourage others to give cheerfully too 鈥 but maybe not.

Two friends of mine recently told me, that till they knew of my story, they鈥檇 proudly signed up to donate heart, lungs, liver, the works, except.... like ten percent of organ donors, they鈥檇 preferred to leave the 鈥榗ornea鈥 box unticked. Till now! Which makes me well up, though that could be the eyedrops. It鈥檚 all been quite an eye-opener. And I鈥檓 sorry 鈥 my corny cornea jokes just cover how awkwardly grateful I am.听

If God loves a cheerful giver, I find it inspiring that those cheerful gifts could include hope, and actual vision. The future鈥檚 so bright, I got to wear shades. Whatever we believe or don鈥檛 about the hereafter, maybe it鈥檚 one way we听can听live beyond our lifetime 鈥 even a tiny bit. So I will be watching Sunday鈥檚 match with clearer vision! And yup, I鈥檝e got something in my eye 鈥 and I鈥檓 very glad about that.听
