The Unauthorised Version
Roy Jenkins uncovers the secrets of some of the ancient gospels that didn't make it into the New Testament. What if anything can they tell us about Jesus and his disciples?
Banned by some of the early Church Fathers as false or heretical, the unauthorised, apocryphal gospels continue to exercise a hold on the popular imagination through novels, new translations and through numerous conspiracy theories. Roy Jenkins investigates some of the many surviving texts that didn't make it into the accepted canon of the New Testament, and asks what if anything they can tell us about Jesus and his followers. Centuries before Dan Brown and The Da Vinci Code, some elements of the apocryphal gospels have entered mainstream Christianity, and even into The Koran.
Roy's guests include New Testament scholars Professor Simon Gathercole and Emeritus Professor Keith Elliott, historian Martyn Whittock, archaeologist Stephanie Boonstra, and Father John Browne, priest of the Catholic parish of St Joachim and St Anne in Dunvant, Swansea.
