Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

An excruciating moment the other day: I was on a telly quiz, I won鈥檛 say which one, only it鈥檚 likely to be seen by more people than watch the Archbishop of Canterbury鈥檚 Christmas Sermon. Now, I love a quiz, and sailed through it, category after category, until the Bible question, which of course I got spectacularly, irredeemably, wrong. It was like asking Carol Vorderman 鈥榳hat does two plus two make?鈥 and her answering 鈥淜athmandu鈥.

It reminded me of another time, when I was a curate, and someone came into church very distressed and asked if they could talk to me. Yes, of course, what鈥檚 the matter? 鈥淚鈥檝e broken the fifth commandment!鈥 came the anxious reply, which left me even more anxious, because I can never remember which is which, and there鈥檚 a world of difference between honouring your father and mother and murder. Fortunately it was the former, and relatively easy to sort out. Murder is number six.听

It鈥檚 embarrassing because I really should know this stuff. I can remember the flags of Brunei, the Marshall Islands and the Cambodian Royal Family, I can remember the state capitals of Nebraska, Rhode Island and New Mexico*, but I cannot remember the order of the Ten Commandments, the names of the disciples, nor the seven churches of Revelation. And yet I read the Bible every single day.

That鈥檚 why. I don鈥檛 need to memorise the Bible, in the way I would the Highway Code, because it鈥檚 always to hand, on my desk, in my bag, on my iPhone, and so it frees my mind to concentrate on the stuff that needs my full attention - what does it mean to be a follower of Jesus Christ, how can I serve God and neighbour, what do I look like to someone who wants to do the same?

If you are a religious professional you have to find ways of coding the mystery of faith, to capture it in the passing moment, so it can endure. That means organisation, institutions, writings, rules 鈥 and you can easily become so preoccupied with the detail you forget why the detail is worth bothering with in the first place; arguing over interpretations of marriage regulations when we should be waving newly-weds off with our blessings, and prayers.听

But there鈥檚 no way round it; and if it were easy it wouldn鈥檛 be worth doing; and we must be patient with the shortcomings of humanity so that the grace of God may grow.
