Christian O'Connell, Bimini Bon Boulash and Jay's Virtual Radio Quiz

Zoe chats to DJ Christian O'Connell about his new book, which tells his story of moving to Australia. Bimini Bon Boulash from RuPaul's Drag Race UK tells Zoe about their new music.

Zoe chats to the DJ Christian O'Connell about his new book, No One Listens To Your Dad's Show. Christian was one of the most popular voices in the United Kingdom presenting the Absolute Radio breakfast show but chose to give it all up and start again in Australia; this is the remarkable and touching story of why he made such a momentous decision on the spur of the moment. No One Listens to Your Dad's Show is the story of Christian risking everything, uprooting his wife, two daughters and his dog to move to Australia. A move that lands him as a complete unknown in a country where, he soon finds out, no one wants to hear him on the radio.

Bimini Bon Boulash tells Zoe about their new book, new music and all their other exciting plans they have to come in 2021. Bimini competed in the second series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK and finished as the Runner-Up behind the winner Lawrence Chaney.

Jay Flynn returns with another round of his Virtual Radio Quiz where he tests the team on their general knowledge to see who comes out on top.

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Some of best – and worst – storytellers I have heard are rabbis.ÌýÌýWe use stories to inspire, persuade and teach.ÌýÌýÌýAnd when it works, a good story challenges us to think in completely new ways.

Ìý

The tradition of rabbinic storytelling goes back at least to the great Rabbi Hillel, over 2000 years ago.ÌýÌýThe most magnificent stories are actually told about him.ÌýÌý

Ìý

Hillel was known – unlike most rabbis, me included – for being unusually patient, something that seemed to upset people.ÌýÌýOne of his detractors bet another a large sum to make Hillel angry.ÌýÌýHe called at Hillel’s house when he was washing his hair and rudely demanded to see him.ÌýÌýHillel emerged wrapped in a towel to deal with what he assumed was an emergency.ÌýÌýBut his antagonist asked a silly and insulting question.ÌýÌýTo his surprise, Hillel answered carefully without getting cross.ÌýÌýJust an hour later, the man returned with an even more ridiculous question, which Hillel again answered calmly.ÌýÌýAfter the third time, the man said to Hillel ‘I have many more questions to ask, but I’m concerned you will get angry’.ÌýÌýHillel, still wrapped in his towel, merely said, ‘ask whatever you want’.ÌýÌýThen the man became enraged with Hillel and told him that he’d just lost a large sum of money because of his refusal to get angry.ÌýÌýHillel’s response, ‘better you should lose twice the amount than I get angry!’

Ìý

Like the best stories, this inverts the narrative, with the troublesome person getting angry with Hillel for having lost him the bet.

Ìý

The most famous Hillel story is about a man who wanted to convert to Judaism on condition that Hillel taught him the entire Jewish Bible while balancing on one foot.ÌýÌýHillel’s colleague and sparring partner, Shammai, drove the man away for his insolence, but Hillel treated him kindly.ÌýÌýHe converted him and said to him, ‘don’t do to another that which is hateful to you; this is the entire Torah – now go and study the rest’.

Ìý

Hillel realised that the fellow was unstable – literally and religiously, so treated him kindly. Hillel showed what today is known as emotional intelligence to the troubled people he encountered.ÌýÌýI believe that each of us can learn from Hillel to change the way we respond to others, by trying to understand them, not just what they say.
