Bernardine Evaristo
Cerys curates a curious playlist of hidden gems and discoveries. Cerys is joined by British writer Bernardine Evaristo, who discusses her career, black literary history and awards.
Cerys curates a curious playlist of hidden gems, global delights and new discoveries. This week new releases from Arooj Aftab, Ben Howard and Fana Hues are nestled amongst Betty Davis, Wilson Pickett, Phoebe Bridgers and birdsong swing. British writer Bernardine Evaristo joins Cerys to discuss her latest project addressing the invisibility of black British literary history and her role as the chair of the 2021 Women’s Prize for Fiction. Bernardine shares tracks which have helped her through lockdown as well as giving tips for budding writers.
Bernardine is a Professor of Creative Writing at Brunel University London and her work includes novels, poetry, verse fiction, short fiction, essays, literary criticism, and radio and theatre drama. Her writing and projects are based around her interest in the African diaspora and in 2019 she won the Booker Prize for her novel Girl, Woman, Other.
Recently Bernardine has been curating Black Britain: Writing Back, a new book series re-publishing books which have been out of circulation. The first six books (fiction) were published earlier this year with the oldest on the list being Minty Alley (1936) by C.L.R. James.
