Alan Carr sits in, with Dr Mya-Rose Craig
Alan Carr sits in for Zoe and chats to "Birdgirl", 18-year-old ornithologist Dr Mya-Rose Craig, about her new podcast. Plus Alan keeps the tunes rolling on Maximum Music Monday.
Wake up and embrace the day with Alan Carr and the team!
18-year-old ornithologist Dr Mya-Rose Craig, AKA "Birdgirl", talks to Alan about his new favourite hobby - birdwatching - and her brand new podcast, Get Birding. In this new podcast, people up and down the UK will be encouraged to venture into their gardens and local parks to get to know Britain’s birds, find out how and where to see them and start to understand their behaviour. Environmentalist Dr Mya-Rose Craig has been birding since she was just 9 days old. She is the youngest ever member of the RSPB advisory committee and at the age of 17, she became the youngest Brit to be awarded an honorary doctorate in for her work fighting for equal access to nature and for ethnic diversity in the environmental sector.
Between 8 am and 9 am Alan keeps the tunes rolling on Maximum Music Monday and plays three classic power ballads from his personal collection in his Power Ballad Playlist at 8.30!
Along with Adam Porter on news, Richie Anderson on travel and Mike Williams on sport, Alan and the team have the best start to your morning. With celeb guests, quizzes, headlines, tunes chosen by listeners and more music that you can shake a glitterball at!
There's also a Pause For Thought from Jahnavi Harrison and listeners on the line as Alan entertains the nation with fun for the family!

Pause For Thought
I’ve been here in LA for the last two weeks. It’s such an interesting place of extremes and contradictions. The Hollywood sign looms over the city where arguably most of the world’s entertainment mega powers are clustered, along with what sometimes feels like one of the most visible homeless populations I’ve ever seen in the Western world.Ìý
It’s beautiful and brash and ugly at times, and occasionally, everything the movies promise!
Ìý
So it was a breath of fresh air to drive with my friend, out of the city and up into Topanga Canyon – which is, as she put it, where all the hippies and people ‘aggressively into wellness’ live! Well, I can see why…narrow roads wind through shady groves and Lord of the Rings-esque mountains. It’s a little idyll not far from the city.
Ìý
We were there to hike to a little cave – about an hour up a rocky trail. We trudged up the steep path with our guitar and violin, breathing in the clear air. Occasionally a bird of prey soared silently past.
Ìý
When we got to the top of Eagle Rock, we lowered ourselves and our instruments into the alcove in the rock and finally took a deep breath as we looked out over a vista of green.Ìý
Ìý
Sages and yogis have traditionally headed to caves to live in continuous prayer and meditation. My mum actually did it for a few weeks when she was 18, but that’s another story! It sounds extreme, but, I don’t know…everytime I get inside one, it’s quite appealing!…Time feels suspended and the womb like walls create a protective barrier against the 24/7 chatter of the outside world.Ìý
Ìý
Hindu texts speak of the cave of the heart – or the hridaya guha, teaching that within each of us there is a secret, sacred space – a refuge…a place to bring the deepest questions. That place is said to house the soul, and the Supreme Friend and witness, God within the heart. It’s a place I try to visit regularly but it’s all too easy to forget when I’m rushing through the week.
Ìý
Anyway, we did a little cave jam with the trees and a couple of amused hikers for an audience. Afterwards we walked back down the mountain, in a happy silence for a while, and I promised myself to make cave time, inside and out, more often.Ìý
