Masterchef judge Gregg Wallace tells Alan about his new Channel 5 travel show, Gregg Wallace: Big Weekends Away. Filmed in 2019, the series offers up some much-needed escapism to some of Europe's most picturesque cities from the comfort of our own living room. Gregg starts his journey in Barcelona before heading to Rome, Edinburgh and Istanbul where he'll explore everything these cities have to offer.

Pause For Thought

I鈥檓 rarely early, in truth and to my husband鈥檚 intense frustration, I鈥檓 never early 鈥� not intentionally, but because I think I can fit in one more thing.听听But last week I made an exception setting out well ahead of my 3pm appointment for my first covid vaccine 鈥� that one more thing would have to wait.

听

I must admit I was surprised to receive a text inviting me to make an appointment听听鈥� I mean how old do they think I am!听听However, with excitement, relief, gratitude, and a touch of curiosity, and faster than a guided missile, I clicked the link, booking my slot in the hospital Rec Centre.听

听

I know some people have questions around the vaccine, but for me moving towards ending mass infection and lockdown, and getting to hug my parents, friends and baby great niece is way beyond any doubts.听听听I was ready.

听

huddled up against last weeks bitter cold and ice, and wearing my most solid, and least elegant shoes, I was greeted by clip board bearing, warm hearted, volunteers.听听An astonishing 8 minutes early, and I was inside, my sleeve already rolled up underneath my coat.听

听

As I sat in the cavernous, adapted, hushed sports hall, waiting for something to happen, I felt strangely safe, secure, cared for and, above all, part of a community.听

听听

鈥淐ommunity鈥�, wrote the late Rabbi, Lord Jonathan Sacks, 鈥渋s society with a human face 鈥� the place where we know we鈥檙e not alone.鈥� In that hall I knew, even sitting on my socially distanced chair, that we can beat the virus, if we do it together.听

听

I emerged from the hall within five minutes, clutching my blue vaccination card. And whilst I may officially be older, i still got a childish thrill out of the little sticker now proudly displayed on my chest.听

听

Slipping and sliding my way back to the car I thought I might even be home early for my next Zoom meeting.听听But then again.听听I reckoned I could probably just about squeeze in a tiny celebratory and edible pit stop as I headed hurriedly, for a nearby open bakery.听听
