Curling, Neeps and Caterthuns

Join Mark Stephen and Euan McIlwraith for the latest outdoor activities from Shetland to the Borders, plus the key stories for those who live and work in the countryside.

Ornithologist and ecologist Roy Dennis was a recent guest on our Scotland Outdoors podcast. While chatting to Roy, Euan was interested to find out more about how animals and bird get their names and some of the interesting historical influences involved.

This week’s Scotland Outdoors guest is writer and illustrator Jackie Morris. In this excerpt she shares some of her favourite birds and beasts with Helen and Mark.

We are joined live by Helen O’Keefe, from Elphin, Sutherland, who was recently picked as the Scottish Crofting Federation's Young Crofter of the Year. Originally from Australia, Helen emigrated in 2015 after falling in love with the north west Highlands while on holiday. She tells us about the life of a modern crofter.

Mark discovers another side to one of his favourite hills in Aberdeenshire, Bennachie.

Euan has been flexing his poetic muscles once more to tell us all about curling stones.

And we are joined live by Jayne Stirling from Scottish Curling to tell us about the history of the sport and the differences in playing it indoors and outdoors.

Our lockdown walk this week comes from Laura who visits the Caterthuns, two iron age hillforts near her home in Angus.

And they’re not just for Burns Night- Mark learns about the significance of the humble neep in revolutionising agriculture in Scotland and the role they still play today.

Mystery bird is back and as challenging as ever. Can you guess what it is?

And Mark meets a family making the most of the outdoors, even in the wintery conditions.
