Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Dave Tomlinson, writer and vicar at large:
My wife Pat and I are big coffee lovers. And one of my favourite pastimes (sadly denied at the moment) is a relaxed hour or so in a homely coffee shop reading, writing or having a fine conversation over a lovingly brewed latte. A while back, we were doing just this in a quiet town we visited. On the next table, sat a young girl with (we presumed) her grandma having an orange juice and a large slice of cake after school.聽
I couldn鈥檛 help overhearing their charming conversation and gestured to Pat to listen in. When she got up to leave, the lady (who鈥檇 clearly taken note of our interest) leaned across, smiling, and said, 鈥業鈥檓 not really her grandma, you know, my grandchildren are grown up and long gone. But when my husband passed away, I decided to put a small ad in a shop window offering to be a grandma to any family that needed one. I鈥檓 a big believer in recycling, so, I thought 鈥 why not recycle myself?鈥櫬
To which the girl added, 鈥楢nd when my mummy saw the sign, she asked the shopkeeper to take it down right away so no one else could get her.鈥 The sagely Dr Seuss, says, 鈥榃hen something bad happens, you have three choices. You can let it define you, let it destroy you, or you can let it strengthen you.鈥 To which our coffee shop grandma may add: 鈥楢nd you can recycle yourself!鈥 Which I think is an inspired way to put it, because whilst drawing strength from adversity clearly requires courage, to recycle or reinvent oneself transforms that courage into affirmative action 鈥 like overcoming the loss of a beloved partner by becoming a treasured 鈥榞randma鈥.聽
From my experience, hardship can easily turn attention inward, an understandable instinct of self-preservation, yet I know that I flourish best in hard times when my attention turns outwards toward others. Kindness, consideration and gratitude are some of the best medicines I know for healing distress, disappointment or a broken heart. Or as St Francis famously prayed: 鈥楪rant that I may not so much seek to be loved as to love鈥or it is in giving that we receive.鈥
