Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
Harvey Belovski, rabbi at Golders Green United Synagogue:
Apart from being my parents’ 55th wedding anniversary today – mazal tov mum and dad – it’s also Trafalgar Day.  That’s the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, at which the Royal Navy vanquished the French and Spanish fleets at Cape Trafalgar, near Spain. Trafalgar Day is also the anniversary of the death of the great Admiral Lord Nelson, who commanded the British fleet and was fatally shot aboard HMS Victory.  Nelson’s body was submerged in a cask of flavoured brandy and lashed to Victory’s mainmast for transportation back to England and a state funeral.  I’ve always wondered what they did with the brandy afterwards. Horatio Nelson was a complex man.
Today, a somewhat controversial figure, for his apparent opposition to the abolition of slavery, he joined the navy when only 12.  He rose through the ranks, demonstrating his genius at numerous battles until he became the most celebrated sailor in British history. I’m fascinated by Nelson’s attitude to duty.  His most famous quote – a signal to his men that the Battle of Trafalgar was starting – is ‘England expects that every man will do his duty’.  But this barely scratches the surface of Nelson’s loyalty to his country and men.  I recently discovered that Nelson suffered from chronic seasickness through his life, yet he stayed at sea to the very end.  Mortally wounded at Trafalgar, he was carried below deck for the final time.  Yet he continued to issue instructions to his deputies while he could and then covered his own face with a cloth so not to demoralise the crew who might see him in that state. I find Nelson’s sense of duty inspirational.  All of us have loyalties to family, jobs, ideals, friends, but I suspect that when they are tested by extreme circumstances, our own needs win out.  I wonder how many of us have the presence of mind to avoid upsetting others when we are badly hurt or distressed ourselves.
And I remember being astonished that one of my teachers had missed the circumcision of a long-awaited grandson because he was needed to speak at a major community event, and wondered if I would have done the same. Today, outside naval circles, Trafalgar Day may go unnoticed, but Trafalgar Square and Nelson’s Column in central London remind us of a man whose commitment to duty can inspire us all.
