Pause For Thought
This week my young foster son has discovered the wonder of conkers. He now knows where all the horse chestnut trees in town are and has been cheerfully harvesting their seeds each evening on our family walk. He takes particular pleasure in those he has had to personally bust out from their spiky casings. Each conker elicits a little song of delight from him for everyone to hear. Enjoying and exploring our environment is a wonderful thing to do with children. Throughout the year our family loves getting our hands dirty at our local park, nature reserve and public footpaths.Β
We forage in the bushes for blackberries, we paddle in the stream, we enjoy spotting woodland wildlife, we race, we dig, we climb. I love the sense of adventure the great outdoors is bringing to my kids. Over the last few months my childrenβs hands have gone from being inevitably grubby to meticulously clean. While I used to own very few antiseptic products, now my home is filled with them and our singalong handwashing routine has become one any surgeon would be proud of. I believe this new commitment to handwashing is a simple and effective way all of us can fight the virus. Perhaps surprisingly, the Bible contains an ancient song about washing in the wake of a deadly contaminant. Over 2500 years ago King David wrote: Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin.Β
Reflecting on the terrible mistakes he had made in his life, David believed that it was only through a deep clean of his soul performed by God himself that he could find forgiveness. David not only found the spiritual cleansing he was so desperate for he also declared that it was available to everyone, no matter what they had done. The wonders of a clean conscience elicited songs of joy from David that fill the Bible and are sung around the world to this day. I am looking forward to a walk through the autumnal woods with my foster son tonight. I am pretty sure I will come home laden with conkers. Then I will transform into drill sergeant mode and make sure each of us washes our hands!
