Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
Matt Woodcock, Church of England Pioneer Minister and Mission Supporter in the Diocese of York:
He’s known in his beloved home city of Bradford - is always a lively experience. He’s loud and outrageously flamboyant. Spent decades trying to make community life more exciting and joyful. There’s not much Robin hasn’t tried to grab and keep people’s attention. He once created a ‘Gospel According to Queen’ event and dressed as Freddie Mercury - complete with vest, black moustache and tight white trousers. One Sunday in church I saw him smoke a cigar and drink from a beer can to illustrate a spiritual point. I’m still not sure what it was - but he had a great time. Robin’s unconventional, swashbuckling style has certainly rubbed off on me over the years.
As part of my talk once during a packed civic occasion, I tried to climb down the dangerously high pulpit while our organist played the Mission Impossible theme tune. It nearly ended in catastrophe. My clerical robes became snagged and I got stuck. Dangling helplessly over the Lord Mayor below me. I didn’t try that again.
Yet flamboyant stunts aside, Robin’s enduring impact on me has been as a trusted confidante, careful listener and gentle encourager. In good times and difficult ones. Oprah Winfrey once said that such faithful friends and mentors are people who make sure we are never alone and allow us ‘to see the hope inside ourselves.’ That’s been my experience. Robin offered comfort and reassurance when I lost confidence at work. When my wife and I struggled to have kids. When my precious aunty died.
I’ve found that the joys, trials and irritations of everyday life are always better shared with a wise friend. Someone to confide in and be accountable to. My Christian faith certainly doesn’t function well in isolation. It’s inherently relational - with God and those around me. I need help to stay on the spiritual straight and narrow. ‘One friend sharpens another,’ the Bible teaches. Sharpened into a kinder, more understanding, generous person, hopefully. Bradford’s ‘Rockin’ Reverend’ has certainly helped smooth away some of my rougher edges. I just need to borrow his Queen costumes now. I think our parish is ready for my ‘Freddie’, Dermot!
