Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From comedian & writer Paul Kerensa:聽
You can鈥檛 watch CBeebies for long without meeting clown Mr Tumble with his spotty bag, and his catchy song: 鈥淔riends... Friends... What can you do with friends? Walk a dog, read a book, catch a ball, or we could cook, ride a horse, paddle in the sea, Maybe you can come and play with me!鈥 Back in the heat of lockdown, my children considered that song, and realised it needed a rewrite. 鈥淲hat can you do with friends? Er... Catch a ball? No. Paddle in the...? No. Walk a...? Not together.鈥澛
The replacement lyric they suggested: 鈥淲hat can you do with friends? Chat online.鈥 But in their actions, they went beyond. They鈥檇 steer our daily walk past friends鈥 houses, in hope of a hello. Letters were written, gifts were given (often plundered from their own toys, back when the shops were unreachable). For friends鈥 birthdays, my children would stand in front gardens with banners, shout greetings through the window, like a bank teller and customer. Above them on the window pane, rainbow drawings, that biblical symbol of hope. In the Bible, St Paul wrote letters to his friends too.聽
To his friends in Rome, he urged: 鈥淟ove one other with genuine affection; outdo one another in showing honour.鈥 To his friends in Thessalonica, he wrote: 鈥淓ncourage one another, build each other up, as indeed you鈥檙e doing.鈥 And as indeed my children are doing. But me? Not for the first time, I learn from them. They鈥檝e got it right. I鈥檝e not given my adult friendships the attention my kids have given theirs. With local friends, we鈥檝e had the odd doorstep hello, food-drop, even the odd meet-up in a field. With less local friends, social media groups, video-call quizzes and virtual meet-ups have bonded and reminded us that we鈥檙e a unit. Thankfully, Mr Tumble鈥檚 list is mostly ok now.聽
We can walk a dog, paddle in the sea, and catch a ball (handgel on standby). With grown-up friends, occasional in-house cautious cuppas are possible, for some. For others, we must still adapt. I鈥檒l look back on this, remember how my children changed their expressions of friendship, and try and do likewise. When we need new ways to show our friendship, trust the children to pull new ideas out of Mr Tumble鈥檚 Spotty Bag.
