The New Scots

Exploring the incredible stories of people from Syria, Poland and Bangladesh who have chosen to make Scotland their home.

A series of short stories exploring the diversity of Scottish society through the experiences of three people who have chosen to make Scotland their home.

In the programme we meet Marwa, Harry and Himel. Marwa recently started studying at college and has big dreams for the future. But it wasn’t always like that. She was just 11 when she had to flee her home in Syria. Scotland welcomed her when her and her family had nowhere else to go.

Harry came to Scotland for a holiday 12 years ago and never left. Growing up in conservative Poland, Harry thought he was destined to become a priest. But life doesn’t always turn out how you expect it to. It was in Scotland that he could finally come out as gay. Now he runs a bakery in Glasgow and has found the love of his life.

When Himel was growing up in the metropolis of Dhaka, Bangladesh, one of the last places he imagined he would move to would be a remote community in the north of Scotland. Now, he couldn’t think of living anywhere else. Himel runs a restaurant on the beautiful Isle of Skye, serving up Indian food to locals and tourists alike.
