Finals involving two of Wimbledon’s greatest stars feature in this trawl through the SW19 archives - Boris Becker and Steffi Graf, who have ten singles titles between them.
Becker announces himself to the world in 1985 when, as an unknown 17-year-old, he wins Queen’s and then battles his way through to the final at the All England Club. Standing in the way of the teenage German becoming Wimbledon’s youngest-ever men’s singles champion is South African-born Kevin Curran, who has beaten Stefan Edberg, Jimmy Connors and defending champion and top seed John McEnroe on his way to facing Becker.
Becker’s compatriot Steffi Graf already has five Wimbledon singles titles under her belt when she begins her 1995 campaign, so it is no surprise that the top seed is the favourite when she faces Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in the final. The Spaniard has always preferred other surfaces to grass but her indomitable fighting spirit means that Graf is never going to have it all her own way.
