Agassi vs Ivanisevic, Rafter vs Ivanisevic

Two of tennis’s great entertainers, Andre Agassi and Goran Ivanisevic, take centre stage in today’s look back at classic Wimbledon finals of the modern era.

Two of tennis’s great entertainers, Andre Agassi and Goran Ivanisevic, take centre stage in today’s look back at classic Wimbledon finals of the modern era.

The flamboyant Agassi’s baseline game did not seem a natural fit with the lightning-fast grass of the All England Club but in 1992, the 12th seed makes it through to the final, where he faces the big-serving Croat Goran Ivanisevic. A classic and fascinating match-up of opposing styles, it lives up to all expectations.

Nearly a decade later in 2001, Ivanisevic has to rely on a wild card to compete at Wimbledon. But against all the odds, the world number 125 comes through the draw, breaking British hearts by beating Tim Henman in the last four. In the final, Ivanisevic plays another fans’ favourite in Australia’s Pat Rafter. A rain-delayed Monday final provides a unique and lively atmosphere, which, along with the drama of the action, ensures that it will be a match never to be forgotten.
