Irmin Schmidt In Huddersfield

Elizabeth Alker speaks to Krautrock pioneer, composer and founder member of the band Can, Irmin Schmidt, at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music festival.

In this week's episode of Unclassified, Elizabeth Alker takes a trip over the Pennines down the highest and most bleak but beautiful part of the M62 to Huddersfield. Krautrock pioneer, soundtrack and contemporary music composer and founder member of the band Can, Irmin Schmidt brought a special performance to the Huddersfield Contemporary Music festival this month and he spoke to Elizabeth all about his career long commitment to deeper listening, the importance of silence, improvisation and Kanye West. As well as the chat with Irmin this episode will look at some of the other highlights from HCMF.

Elizabeth also has the radio premiere of brand new music by Grammy award winning guitarist with American band The National and classically trained composer and arranger, Bryce Dessner, plus she'll be looking ahead to Daniel Avery's next live dates and she has an exclusive instrumental cut from a new folk opera by Rachel Grimes. We'll also hear Galya Bisengalieva and Rob Ames in a new recording of music by Ed Finnis.
