Voltaire’s witty 18th century novel of ideas about good and evil.

It follows the eponymous hero Candide and the long-suffering Dr Pangloss, on an epic, picaresque journey through Europe and South America.

Along the way they endure terrible misfortunes but somehow manage to retain optimism about what life has in store.

It begins when Candide falls in love and is expelled from paradise.
