The cross-country section has for the third year been designed by Eric Winter, who last year created a challenging yet authentic and picturesque 32-fence course that saw 44 clear rounds out of the 77 starters. Only eventual winner Jonelle Price, on board Classic Moet, came close to the optimum time of 11 minutes and 49 seconds, finishing just one second over it. It was that performance that saw the New Zealand rider jump from 22nd place after the dressage stage to the top of the leaderboard – demonstrating how important a strong cross-country showing is.
This year’s field contains seven previous winners including Price, fellow New Zealander Mark Todd and experienced Brits William Fox-Pitt and Pippa Funnell. Three of the four British team gold medal winners from the 2018 World Equestrian Games are also scheduled to compete.
