An Iolaire - Bidh sinn a’ cuimhneachadh (Remembering the Iolaire)

On the centenary of the Iolaire disaster, we explore how art is helping the community of Lewis commemorate and remember those who were lost.

Air Oidhche na Bliadhna Ùire, 1918, bha an HMY Iolaire air an t-slighe dhachaigh a Steòrnabhagh, le seòladairean às na h-eileanan a’ tilleadh dhachaigh bhon Chogadh Mhòr.
Bhuail i Biastan Thuilm, mun tàinig i a-staigh a chala Steòrnabhaigh, agus chaill 205 duine air bòrd am beatha. ’S è an Iolaire fhathast an tubaist as miosa aig àm sìth ann am Breatainn, agus thug e buaidh nach tuig sinn air a’ choimhearsnachd a dh’fhuiling na buille. Tha am prògram seo a’ toirt sùil air mar a chaidh an sgeulachd sin innse thairis air a’ cheud bliadhna bhon a thachair e, agus cho riatanach ‘s a tha ealain ann a bhith ga chuimhneachadh ’s ga chomharrachadh.

Tha An Lanntair ann an Steòrnabhagh air obair ionmholta a dhèanamh gus cuideachadh luchd-ealain obair sònraichte a chruthachadh mar chuimhneachan air.
A-measg an fheadhainn a tha sinn a’ leantainn, an neach-ciùil agus cumadair-ciùil, Iain Moireasdan a tha a’ cruthachadh pìos-ciùil ùr; agus tha an luchd-ealain Alec Galloway, Mhairi Law agus Margaret Ferguson a’ cruthachadh obair-ealain lèirsinneach ceangailte ris an tachartas cuideachd.

A bharrachd air sin, tha An Lanntair, as leth a’ choimhearsnachd, ag obair gus carragh-cuimhne ùr a thogail, far an leughar mu dheireadh thall ainmean an fheadhainn a chaillear.
Bidh an carragh-cuimhne seo air a chruthachadh le feadhainn den luchd-ealain as ainmeile ann an Alba - Will Maclean, Marian Leven agus Arthur Watson, mar làrach-chuimhne bith-bhuan air na Seòid a chaill am beatha an oidhche ghoirt sin.

On New Year's Eve 1918, HMY Iolaire was taking sailors home from the Great War to the Isle of Lewis. She struck the rocks at the mouth of Stornoway Harbour - the Beasts of Holm.
205 men were lost in what is still the the worst peacetime disaster at sea in Britain. The effect on the community was beyond measure.

This documentary is about how that story was told over the last 100 years, and the importance of art in that remembering process a century later.

An Lanntair have commissioned artists to commemorate the centenary of the Iolaire disaster. Amongst those we follow is musician and composer Iain Morrison, who is composing and performing a unique new piece of work. Visual artists such as Alec Galloway, Mhairi Law and Margaret Ferguson will also give their own artistic reflection on the event.

An Lanntair also have plans, with the support of the community, to create a new memorial to mark the loss. This new work will be created by some of the Scotland's greatest artists - Will Maclean, Marian Leven and Arthur Watson, as a lasting memorial for those that were lost.
