Faith and Freshers
Mary Stallard examines the issues facing students ahead of Freshers week. What part does faith play in their lives, and what are the challenges facing them?
Freshers’ week starts in many places next week: student life can be a significant time of self-exploration and learning for many, often as they leave home for the first time.
But in the context of freshers week partying and then intensive studying, what are the unique challenges facing people of faith, and how important is faith in the wider context of university?
Joining Mary Stallard to discuss this are four people with personal experience: Josh Ludlow is a third year student who’s the interfaith rep for his Christian Union; El Ruth Harmony has just finished a law degree and is the student worker at City Church in Cardiff; Laura Jones was Wales first female Muslim university chaplain and now works for the Muslim Council of Wales; the Rev Steve Bunting came to Wales to study in 1999 and is now a member of the chaplaincy team at Swansea University.
