There are over 3000 nautical miles between Cardiff Bay, and the port of Aden in Yemen – an ancient land south of Saudi Arabia where it is said the Queen of Sheba once ruled.

It’s a route the ships used to take from Cardiff carrying coal to other parts of the world. Aden was used as a staging post, and Yemeni seafarers worked on the ships.

Many ended up in Cardiff and some stayed even after shipping went in to decline.

People like Ali Salaman, who arrived in Cardiff in the 1930s. He ended up marryingÌýa Welsh woman Olive, and set up the Cairo Hotel in Butetown. His son Daoud is pictured above with Olive.

For these people, both Yemen and Wales are home. But Yemen is being torn apart.
