1968: The Year Of Dreams
Dr Kim Howells and his contemporaries take a look back at a year of protest, revolution and war and considers its social and political legacy. Featuring music and archive.
Dr. Kim Howells, former student radical and, later, government minister, recalls his experiences of a dramatic year of protests, revolutions and wars. Fifty years on from 1968, he takes us through events on both sides of the Atlantic and considers their social and political legacy.
It was a year of high drama in America and Europe. The assassinations of Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King in America, the huge street demonstrations against the Vietnam War, student unrest in Paris, London and Berlin, the Chicago Riots, the Prague Spring: all played out against a soundtrack of The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and The Doors.
With a soundtrack of music and archive from 1968, Kim Howells speaks to his contemporaries about their own experiences and memories of the Year of Dreams.
