Prof. Peter Halligan
This week Adam is in conversation with Prof. Peter Halligan, the new Chief Scientific Advisor for Wales.
Peter is a distinguished psychologist and neuroscientist and he’s established an international reputation for his work on the human brain and the idea of consciousness. He was the founding director of Cardiff University’s Brain Research Imaging Centre and he’s currently Chief Executive of the Learned Society of Wales. On March 1st 2018 he takes over from Prof. Julie Williams as the Welsh Government’s Chief Scientific Advisor.
His role will be to give independent scientific advice to the First Minister and help develop the Welsh Government’s science policy. He’ll also play an important part in promoting the study of science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine in Wales.
Adam talks to Peter Halligan about his priorities in this new role, his ambitions for Welsh science and the effect of Brexit on scientific research funding. He also asks Peter about his own research career, our understanding of the brain and where human consciousness actually comes from.
