Handicap International

Of the world’s one billion disabled people, 80% live in developing countries. Despite being some of the poorest of the poor, disabled and vulnerable people living in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster, are too often left behind.

Outraged by this injustice, Handicap International’s teams work in 55 countries alongside disabled and vulnerable people to help meet their basic needs, improve their living conditions and promote respect for their dignity and fundamental rights.Β

Restoring hope in a time of war

Restoring hope in a time of war

Bakr, 9 (who you hear about in the appeal), lost both of his legs in a bombing as he was playing with his friends in the street of Mosul in Iraq. Handicap International’s teams help children like Bakr recover both physically – working to minimise the impact of often horrific injuries, and psychologically – dealing with the trauma of suffering, fear and isolation.

Ali is not a human shield

Ali is not a human shield

β€œWhen he’ll be old enough to understand, I will tell him what happened to his parents. And I want everybody to know their story, not only Ali.” Β Β said Kitba, Ali’s aunt. Ali and his family were used as human shields in Mosul, Iraq. Caught in a bombing, Ali was severely injured and his two parents and brother were killed. Handicap International’s physiotherapist took care of little Ali and gave advice to his aunt on how to support his recovery and help him to walk, play and smile again.

This Christmas, thousands of children are wishing for peace

This Christmas, thousands of children are wishing for peace

This Christmas let's give hope and a future to innocent children like Ali and Bakr living in conflict zones and whose only wish for 2018 is peace.

Together we could let them know there is someone who cares – no matter how far away.
